DECATUR, Ala.--The Barry Buccaneers split a pair of game against the Gulf South Conference at the UAH Charger Chillout on Saturday, falling to West Florida 3-2, but bouncing back to beat the host Chargers, ranked fourth in the NFCA National Poll, by the same score.
In the opening game,
Shyla Rider continued her hot hitting, belting solo home runs in the first and third innings to account for both Buccaneer runs.
West Florida got a solo shot from Moira Gustin and then scored two runs on unusual plays, started by Whitney Gay. In the second inning, Gay flew in to a double play, but Lindsey Warrenfeltz beat the third out to the plate to score the Argos' second run. In the sixth inning, Warrenfeltz motored around to score on a single by Gay when Buccaneer first baseman
Maile Keeney cut off the throw from
Ashley Loose in left field.
Amber Jack (4-1) took the loss in relief of
Liz Bennett. She allowed one run on three hits in 1.2 innings. Emily Burge got the win for West Florida. She went the distance stiking out 11, but gave up two runs on five hits and a walk.
In the second game, Jack earned her fourth win with a complete game against the fourth-ranked Chargers. She gave up two runs on five hits and walked five, striking out three.
Katie Arnone belted a solo homer in the fourth inning to tie the game and
Holli Davis, who had driven in the first run, scored the game-winner in the sixth inning on an error by Charger shortstop Kellie Corder.
Jenni Smithson (3-1) took the loss for Huntsville. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk, while striking out five.
The Buccaneers return to South Florida to open Sunshine State Conference play at Nova Southeastern on Friday, Mar. 3.
