ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers broke out the bats to take both ends of their Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader from the Eckerd Tritons, winning game one 20-7 and the nightcap 7-6.
In the first game,
Brian Lima homered twice and drove in seven runs to lead the Buccaneers (32-20, 10-11 SSC) to a 20-7 win.
The Bucs sent 21 men to the plate in the first two innings, scoring 12 runs off Triton starter Pat Feehan (4-7). He lasted 1.2 innings, giving up seven hits, three walks and two hit batters, striking out just one.
Glenn Zavitz (4-0) picked up the win for the Buccaneers. He tossed five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks, striking out one.
In addition to Lima, who also had two singles and scored four runs,
Alex Meneses,
Jerry Thornton and
Cesar Aranguren each had three hits.
Fausto Faraldo,
Ricky Sanchez and
Bobby Hartney each scored three runs, while Aranguren and
David San Juan each had three RBI.
In game two, the Tritons (15-32, 4-17 SSC) jumped out to the early lead. Ryan Searage walked to lead off the second inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam DeVito. Matt Lichtenburg later scored on an error for a 2-0 lead.
The Bucs tied the game 3-3 on four straight hits in the fifth inning. Thornton had a one-out double, and Aranguren, Faraldo and Sanchez followed with singles to plate two runs.
Eckerd's Sean Riley broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with a lead off homer, but Thornton tied it right back up in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to score San Juan.
In the seventh inning, Faraldo led off with a single and Sanchez followed with his 14th homer to give the Bucs their first lead. San Juan added an RBI single to put Barry up 7-4.
The Tritons mounted one more rally in the seventh inning. Craig Albernaz led off with a homer and Bordieri reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Savino. But
Jesse Naber came on to strikeout Searage to end the game, recording his third save.
Eric Hortsmann (1-1) got the win in relief for the Bucs. He tossed 1.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, striking out three.
Jon Campeau (2-7) took the loss for the Tritons despite pitching a complete game. He allowed all seven runs (six earned) on 15 hits, with one strikeout.
The Bucs will close out the regular season May 8-9 at Feinbloom Field against the Saint Leo Lions.
