WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Rollins College Tars and Barry Buccaneers split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Alfond Stadium, with the Tars winning game one 9-4 and the Bucs taking the nightcap 6-3.
The first game was a see-saw affair. The Bucs (21-15, 4-8 SSC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Tars' starter Eduardo Chile. Barry loaded the bases with no out, but managed just an RBI single by
Andrew Frezza and a sacrifice fly by
Alex Brizuela.
The Tars (24-10, 7-5 SSC) tied the game in the fourth inning on a two-run single from Garrett Preisser.
The Bucs went back on top 4-2 in the fifth inning.
Cesar Aranguren had a sacrifice fly and
Fausto Faraldo drove in the other run with a single.
But in the bottom of the inning, Rollins tied it again. Chris Munoz reached on a walk to lead off the inning and came around to score when Nick Manson rifled a shot off the heel of starter
Ray Rhoads and catcher Frezza threw the ball away down the right field line off the carom. Luis Dieguez added a sacrifice fly.
The Tars took their first lead in the sixth off reliever
Eric Horstmann (0-1). Gene Howard doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a bouncer up the middle by Preisser. Nick Manson later delivered a two-run double to break the game open and the Tars went on to the 9-4 win.
Gator Brooks (5-1) picked up the win in relief of Chile. He shut out the Bucs over 4.1 innings of one-hit ball, walking three and striking out four. Horstmann allowed three runs on five hits in an inning and a third.
In the second game, Rollins took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Luis Dieguez singled in Gary Martoccio who had walked.
The Bucs tied the game in the third inning when Martoccio dropped a fly ball off the bat of
Fausto Faraldo to bring in
David San Juan.
Barry took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. The Bucs loaded the bases with no outs and scored on Aranguren's double play ball and wild pitch.
The Tars tied the game in the fifth inning without registering a hit on steals of home by Brent Magnuson and Gene Halbert.
The Bucs finally broke out in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on a walk and three doubles, including a two-run shot by
Bobby Hartney.
Glenn Zavitz (2-0) earned the win in relief of starter
Greg Dicso. He tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with allowing a baserunner and struck out one. Dicso pitched 4.2 innings, allowing only one hit and three runs (two earned), but walked seven.
Mario Lombardo (2-3) took the loss for the Tars, going five innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and a walk, while striking out six.
The Bucs return to Feinbloom Field on Tuesday, Mar. 5 to face the Nova Southeastern Knights in a non-conference tilt at 6:00 pm.
