FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers split a double-header at Florida Gulf Coast in baseball action at Swanson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Bucs (25-18) took the first game 2-1 before falling to the Eagles (33-12) 4-3 in the nightcap.
In the opener, senior right-hander
Alex Gonzalez (7-2) picked up the 2-1 win in a stellar two-hit complete game effort for the Bucs. Gonzalez struck out nine and walked just one as the Eagles only had three runners reach as far as second base.
The Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when
Alex Meneses plated
Brian Lima with a single to left. Lima led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a single by
Danny Aguiar.
The Eagles' Mike Mathews belted a homerun to tie it up in the seventh inning, but Barry took back the lead in the eighth.
Cesar Aranguren was hit by a pitch and then advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt from
Fausto Faraldo.
Ricky Sanchez scored Aranguren with a single to the left side to secure the 2-1 win.
In the second game, the Bucs went up 1-0 when Faraldo belted a double down the left field line to score Aranguren who reached base on a walk. The Eagles tied it up with an unearned run in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third. The Eagles added unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 4-1.
In the seventh inning,
Brian Lima led off with a single to center and
Nick Corbeil walked to put runners on first and third with no outs. Pinch hitter Jon Fraginals followed with a single to score Lima from third while a throwing error on the play by center fielder David Cox allowed the second run to score while Fraginals advanced to second. With the score 4-3, Meneses followed with a base hit to advance the potential tying run to third base, but the Bucs were unable to push the equalizer across.
Greg Dicso (3-2) picked up the loss for the Bucs, allowing two runs, one earned, and five hits in 3.1 innings of work before giving way to
Jesse Naber. Naber tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, neither earned, and allowing three hits.
Barry was led offensively by Faraldo, who went 3-for-6 on the afternoon with two doubles. Meneses also notched three hits, while Aranguren and Lima notched two hits apiece.
