Baseball Splits SSC Doubleheader With Knights

DAVIE, Fla.—The Nova Southeastern Knights and Barry Buccaneers split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at the NSU Baseball Complex on Saturday, with the Knights winning game one 7-6 and the Bucs taking the nightcap 1-0.

In game one, the Knights (22-8, 7-2 SSC) jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a two-run double by Chris Reynolds in the fifth inning.

The Bucs18-10, 2-4 SSC) rallied for two runs in the sixth inning, on RBI doubles from Ricky Sanchez and Nick Corbeil.

In the top of the ninth, Barry scored three more runs to take a 6-4 lead. Cesar Aranguren plated Alex Meneses and Brian Lima with a single to centerfield.

But in the bottom of the inning, Nova sent six batters to the plate and scored three runs off Barry closer Ray Rhoads (0-2). Mike Pellerito had an RBI double and Derek Lopez tied the game with a single through the left side. With pinch runner Geron Sands at third and Lopez at second, Rhoads uncorked a wild pitch to bring in the winning run.

Rhoads got one out in the ninth, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. Nick Carris (2-0) got one out in the top of the ninth to pick up the win for Nova. Knight starter Derek Antelo was denied his seventh win in seven starts, but tossed seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks, while striking out nine.

In the second game, the Bucs got out to the early lead in the third inning when Alex Meneses walked with two outs and came around to score on a double by Brian Lima.

That would be all Buccaneer starter Alex Gonzalez (4-1) would need as he set down the first 14 Knights in order, striking out seven. NSU's Steve Smith broke up the perfect game with a single in the fifth inning, but that was the only hit they would get. Gonzalez finished with a one-hit shutout, striking out nine without allowing a walk.

Steven Emery (1-4) was the hard-luck loser for the Knights. He tossed a complete game, allowing the one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out four.

The Bucs return to Feinbloom Field on Tuesday, Mar. 22 to face off against Dominican at 6:00 pm.
