SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Barry University softball team managed to split a pair of games earlier today at the St. Mary's (TX) College Classic. Barry (3-1) fell in the tournament opener to the sixth-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (1-0) 6-0, but rebounded with a 1-0 win over the Delta State Lady Statesmen (0-1) to end the day.
In the first game, the Stephanie Pinto (So., Huntsville, Ala.) blasted a solo home run in her first at bat of the season, to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead in the first. Later in the fourth inning, two costly Buccaneer errors opened the flood gates, which led to five Charger runs and the final score 6-0. Lindsey Skinner (Jr., Aurora, Colo.) (1-0) picked up the win for Alabama-Huntsville with a complete game two-hit shutout and struck out four.
Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) suffered the loss for Barry going just 3.2 innings giving up all six Charger runs (four earned) on seven hits. Allison Perantoni (Fr., Miami, Fla.) entered the game in relief and completed the final 3.1 innings without surrendering a run and struck out three.
Against the Lady Statesmen, the Buccaneers managed only one hit through the first six innings of play and narrowly escaped a base loaded, two-hit fifth-inning by Delta State. Finally in the top of the seventh, a lead-off walk and a base hit brought up freshman slugger
Holli Davis (Lake Havasu, Ariz.) as a pinch hitter with two outs. Lis' confidence in the freshman paid off as she drove in the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly to left feild to lift Barry to a solid South Region win over Delta State, 1-0.
Liz Bennett (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) picked up her second win of the year to improve to 2-0. She hurled a complete-game shutout and struck out five. Jenna Smart (Jr., Morris, Ill.) suffered the loss for the Lady Statesmen giving up two hits and one run.
Ashley Loose (So., Mill Creek, Wash.) led the Buccaneers with three hits on the day, while
Cristina DeTagle (Fr., North Miami Beach, Fla.) was the only other Buccaneer to collect a hit on the day.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 4 for day two of the St. Mary's College Classic starting at 11 am with a match-up against Incarnate Word, followed by a 1:30 scheduled start with 11th-ranked and host St. Mary's Rattlers.
