ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers pounded out 15 hits to dispatch the Eckerd Tritons 9-3 in the Bob Tewksbury Classic at Saint Leo University's Thomas Southard Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Brian Lima went four-for-five to lead the Bucs at the plate, smacking his first homer of the season in the first inning.
Fausto Faraldo, who had three hits, and
Ricky Sanchez also homered for Barry (7-4). Faraldo and
David San Juan each drove in two runs.
Ryan Searage, Sam Divito and Jason Recore each had two hits to lead the Tritons.
Alex Gonzalez (1-1) tossed 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs and a walk, while striking out eight. Mike Davila worked out of the seventh and
Luis Gazitua pitched two scoreless innings in his Buccaneer debut.
Jason Wishin (1-2) took the loss for the Tritons (5-7), allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk, recording two strikeouts. Jon Courtemanche pitched five innings in relief, giving up nine hits and three runs.
GAME TWO
ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell 8-7 to the host Saint Leo Lions in the final game of the 2005 Bob Tewksbury Classic at Thomas B. Southard Stadium Saturday night.
The start of the game was delayed for over two hours by the preceding games in the classic, with first pitch coming at 9:05 pm.
The Lions jumped out to a big early lead, scoring five runs in the fifth inning to snap a 2-2 tie. Ray Horal drove in two runs with a double.
The Bucs clawed their way back into the game, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth, then two runs in the eighth on a two-run single by
Cesar Aranguren. Barry tied the game in the ninth inning, when
Nick Corbeil led off with a triple and pinch runner
Bobby Hartney came across to score on a two-single by
Alex Meneses.
The Lions finally pushed across the winning run in the 11th inning. Pinch hitter Sean VanGilder and Eric Thompson singled to lead off the inning off
Jesse Naber (0-1).
Ray Rhoads came on in relief and Ricky Nolan advanced the runners with a bunt. After Rhoads walked Will Justin intentionally to lead the bases, pinch hitter Rhett Teller lifted a fly ball into right field to score VanGilder.
The Bucs tried to rally in the bottom of the inning, but Rich Hittel struck out Meneses with two runners aboard for the final out, earning his first save. David Koons (1-0) picked up the win, despite blowing the save in the ninth inning. Naber took the loss for Barry, despite pitching three strong innings prior to the 11th.
The Bucs will now face Eckerd in the consolation game at 10:00 am on Sunday.
