Box Score HONOLULU, HAWAI'I -- The fifth-ranked Barry University volleyball team kept the Hawai'ian crowd on the edge of their seats capsizing the 14th-ranked Hawai'i Pacific Lady Sea Warriors 3-2 earlier tonight.
After sweeping Chaminade in their early match 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-22), the Buccaneers overcame their fatigue defeating the Sea Warriors in five games 30-25, 10-30, 20-30, 30-27, 15-13.
In game one, the Bucs blasted the opposition with a .310 attack percentage, but the fatigue began to settle in and the Sea Warriors took advantage of several Buccaneer mistakes to win the next two games. The Bucs dug a little deeper to find that fire in the final two games, and on shear heart and determination alone, found just enough to hold on for the win.
Fernanda Ferreira and
Simone Ferrarezi each registered a double-double. Ferreira led all hitters with 19 kills and tallied 12 digs, while Ferrarezi registered a season-high 14 kills and a team-high 17 digs. Newcomer
Samanta Tucillo also registered a personal season-high 10 kills in the Buccaneer winning efforts, while
Daniela Lanza directed the Buccaneer attack with a team-high 33 assists.
Flavia Brakling led the Sea Warriors with 18 kills while Nadica Karleusa and Paula Nascimento tallied 14 and 12 respectively.
With the win, the Buccaneer improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Sea Warriors, who were handed their first loss of the season, fell to 5-1. The Bucs will have one day to regain composure before taking on defending national champion BYU-Hawai'i on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 9 am and will follow-up with second-ranked UC San Diego at 3 pm.
