Box Score TAMPA, Fla. -- The 19th-ranked Barry University women's soccer team (5-3-2, 3-0 SSC) upset the 13th-ranked Tampa Spartans (6-2-0, 0-1 SSC) 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play at Pepin Field earlier tonight.
Tiina Saario scored her second goal of the season at the 28:24 mark off a pass from
Olga Vargas inside the 18-yard box to give the Bucs the early 1-0 lead heading into the half.
In the second half, Vargas picked up her second assist of the game feeding a pass from the midfield down the left side of the Bucs' offensive zone finding the Barry's top scorer
Emelie Karlsson. With Spartan goalie Jade Berbert charging, Karlsson chipped the ball into the right side of the net at 60:29 to extend the Buccaneer lead by two.
With only 5:05 remaining in regulation, Spartan defender Malana Winskas powered a rebound shot inside the six to cut the Buccaneer lead 2-1. However, the Buc defense held strong for the 2-1 victory extending their conference win streak to 35 consecutive games.
For the game, the Bucs maintained possession in their offensive zone for the better half of the game, while out shooting the Spartans 20-4.
Johanna Fischer faced only four Spartan shots, while improving her 2003 record to 5-3-2. Spartan keeper Berbert picked up seven saves in the loss.
The Buccaneers will return to the friendly confines of Buccaneer Field on Friday, Oct. 3 hosting Florida Tech in SSC action at 5 pm .
