Men's Tennis To Play Knights in Conference Tournament Final

Box Score KEY BISCAYNE, Fla.—The Lynn Knights overcame a 2-1 deficit in doubles to upset the #2-seeded Rollins College Tars 5-2 and the #1-seeded Barry Buccaneers rolled easily 5-1 over the Florida Southern Mocs in the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at the Crandon Park Tennis Center on Monday.

The Knights, the third seed, fell behind quickly in doubles, losing at the top two flights. Rollins' Carlos Custodio and Mark Thompson defeated Lynn's Marius Calagaru and Jan Macko 8-4 at number one and Matt Umbers and Andrew Groslimond turned the same trick against Raphael Almeida and Thorston Poelzl at number two. The Knights took the third doubles with Raigo Saluste and Oscar Argaez knocking off the Tars' David Tafur and Drew Sipka 8-6.

In the singles, however, it was all Knights. Calagaru defeated Custodio 6-3, 6-3 at number one. Macko knocked over Umbers 6-4, 6-4 at number three. Argaez defeated Groslimond 7-5, 6-4 at number four and Saluste put the capper on with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rip Rice at number six.

The Knights (14-4) advanced to face the host and top-seeded Barry Buccaneers in the finals. Rollins (11-8) will host on of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional next weekend.

Barry (19-3) reached the finals in easy fashion, beating Florida Southern (14-9) 6-1. The Bucs won two of three doubles, and then captured four of the singles flights for the win.

Barry's Thomas Hipp and Gerold Wiring defeated Marc Becker and Alvaro Nunez 8-6 at number two, while Filip Norrman and Dirk Benninghaus made short work of Jon Leavitt and Josh Berman at number six. The Mocs' Ryan Dunne and Marco Grangerio picked up their only point by defeating Samir M'Bioka and Sebastian Losavio 8-3.

In the singles, Losavio rolled over Josh Berman 6-4, 6-2 and Hipp knocked out Dunne 6-4, 6-1. Gerold Wiring at number three and Dirk Benninghaus finished their matches almost simultaneously to make the final 6-1.

The Bucs and Mocs are the top two seeds next weekend, May 2-3, at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional hosted at Barry.
