LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The second ranked Barry University women's softball team made a statement opening their 2003 campaign with a pair of wins at the Southern Colorado tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. earlier today. In the season opener, the Buccaneers shutout the Mesa State Mavericks 4-0 then eclipsed the NCAA Division II defending national champs St. Mary's Rattlers 9-1 in the nightcap.
After settling a few early season jitters, the Bucs struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Hilary Hamilton was hit by a pitch to score
Heather Cook from third giving the Bucs a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth.
Krista Latessa secured the win with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth giving the Bucs a 4-0 season-opening victory.
Erin Cormier (1-0) hurled a complete game shutout to earn the win, while striking out a career-high 10 batters and allowing a mere two hits. Renee Hietbrink (0-1), who took the loss for the Mavericks, gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits in four innings and walked five.
In the nightcap, the Bucs managed two runs early in the first, however, with two outs Latessa hit her second two-run homer of the day to give the Bucs a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning. The Bucs extended their lead by two heading into the bottom of the sixth, but St. Mary's Roni Garcia narrowed the gap hoping to keep the Rattler hopes alive. Leading 6-1 in the seventh, true freshman
Kim Fujimoto slammed the door with a two-run homer, the first of her collegiate career, as the Bucs downed the defending national champs.
Geralyn Elam (1-0) gave up one run on four hits and struck out four to earn the win for the Bucs. Amanda Bayless (0-1) took the loss and gave up six runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out one.
Latessa went 3-for-5 with six RBI and two home runs to lead the Bucs, while
KD Smith,
Sarah White and Fujimoto added three hits apiece. Fujimoto also added three RBI in her college debut.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 7 for the second day of the tournament facing off with Eastern New Mexico at 12 noon and following up with Regis at 4 pm.
