Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.--The Barry Buccaneers gave it the good old college try, but fell 69-65 to the host Florida Southern Mocs in the opening round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, hosted by FSC, Friday night.
The game was a nip-and-tuck affair. The Mocs led by two, 30-28, at the half on a last-second shot by Brook Kolheim. But Barry came back the tie the game at the end of regulation. Trailing by five with under two minutes remaining, Sanja Zivanovic hit a three-pointer and Sabine Calipso scored on an offensive rebound with :20 seconds left.
In the overtime, FSC skipped out to a five-point lead, on a jumper by Tequila Rouse and a three-pointer by Kolheim. But Barry kept it close on a trey by Candace Blackbird and a jumper by Polona Oberc, with the Mocs missing six straight from the line.
But after baskets by Rouse and Jamie Atkins gave the Mocs a four-point lead, Yashica Nesbit knocked down an offensive rebound basket to trim the lead to two.
The Bucs forced a miss, but could not convert and, on the rebound Tina Gillems was fouled and sunk both free throws with :05 second left to ice the win.
Oberc led the Bucs with 18 points, while Sanja Zivanovic added 15. Calipso had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Antonia Newman led the Mocs with 18.
The Mocs (22-6) advance to play Florida Tech at 2:30 pm on Sunday, while the Bucs end their season 9-19.
