Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers overcame a sluggish start to stomp the Florida Southern Moccasins in three games, 30-23, 30-21 and 30-21 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Region Volleyball Tournament Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.
In the first game, the Moccasins led 22-20 after an attack error by Barry's
Fernanda Ferreira. But Barry scored nine of the next 11 points, led by four kills from
Fernanda Brino, to take the game.
"One of the dangers of having the bye is that sometimes you come out a little tight," Barry coach Dave Nichols said. "Thirty is a long game. I don't tend to stress too much when the game's in the teens. And what our team's done well all year is, when the game's in the 20, that's when we make plays and pull away from other teams."
Game two started out similarly. The Mocs passed well and hitt effectively to pull out to a 17-13 lead. But Barry battled back to tie the game at 19-19, then ripped off 11 of the next 13 points to take the game.
"We got to 25 points but we just couldn't finish the game," Florida Southern coach Jill Stephens said. "I think their experience showed."
Barry rode the momentum from the first two games to an easier win in game three. With the game tied 7-7, the Bucs'
Samanta Tucillo,
Simone Ferrarezi and Ferreira out-served the Mocs, winning eight of the next 11 points for a 15-10 lead and the Bucs never looked back.
"Dani (Barry's
Daniela Lanza) set the ball so well tonight," Brino said. "She just delivered the ball so I could do my job: Put the ball away."
Brino led all hitters with 18 kills and a .457 attack percentage, while Tucillo added 11 kills, hitting .450. Lanza had 40 assists as the Bucs hit .320 for the match.
Pamela Stein led the Mocs with 12 kills, while Jordan McAfee had 32 assists.
Barry (24-3) advances to the Regional Final against Tampa on Saturday at 7:00 pm. Florida Southern closes its season 18-17.
