Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Barry Buccaneers advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer tournament for the first time since 2000 by eliminating the defending champions, Christian Brothers, on penalty kicks Sunday at CBU's Signiago Field. The game, officially recorded as a 1-1 tie, went to a shootout when neither team could score in the overtimes.
"It was a great game, a real back-and-forth affair," Barry coach Kyllene Carter-Weiss said. "It could have gone either way. Both teams had their chances. But I think, in the end, we were bettered prepared. We'd been practicing penalty kicks for two weeks now and it paid off today."
Barry (16-4-3) came out firing early on. Leading scorer
Emelie Karlsson's shot at 4:30 was saved by CBU's Jennifer Kett. Kett, however, could not corral the ball and Karlsson regained it for another shot, which Kett also managed to save.
Christian Brothers (17-1-2) finally broke through at the 63:26 mark. Stacy-Jo Fletcher found Anna Rask unmarked in the box and Rask's diving header found the back of the net.
The lead was short-lived however. Karlsson again took a shot which Kett saved but could not control and Karlsson grabbed the rebound and fed
Tammie Thornton who slotted a shot into the goal at the 69:59 mark.
The first overtime was largely uneventful, but Barry's dodged a bullet just 2:38 in when Fletcher pulled Barry's
Johanna Fischer off the line and rifled a shot that sweeper
Kassy Slattery blocked off the line.
In the second overtime, it was all Barry as they out-shot CBU 4-0. But Kett was up to the challenge, stopping all three shots on goal to send the game in to the shootout.
The keepers dominated the shootout. Kett made two saves, but Fischer stepped up big, stopping four of CBU's five shots, including shots by Shoko Mikami, the nation's leading scorer, Fletcher, Rask and Veronica Botold.
Lindsey Raby and
Tiina Saario reached the net for Barry, while Arna Heimlund scored the lone tally for Christian Brothers.
"We had them scouted very well," Fischer said. "I had seen two of them before, taking penalties at our field. They went the same way again and I was able to anticipate them. One of the other girls gave away her plan too early and the last one just looked rattled when she stepped up."
The game avenged a 3-2 double overtime loss to Christian Brothers earlier this season as well as losses in the last two South Region Finals. Barry advances to face Kennesaw State in the quarterfinals in Morrow, Ga., with the date and time to be determined.
