Volleyball Falls to Spartans

Box Score TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers fell 3-1 to the Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference volleyball action Friday at the Martinez Center, ending Barry's win streak at 18 matches and 55 games. After losing game one 30-18, Tampa rebounded to take the final three games 30-21, 30-18 and 30-27.

The Bucs (22-3, 12-1 SSC) came out in commanding fashion in game one behind the hitting of Simone Ferrarezi who had five kills. With the score tied 7-7, Fernanda Ferreira served up seven straight points to give the Bucs a 14-7 lead and they coasted in to the 30-18 win. Barry hit .382, while holding the Spartans to a .000 percentage.

Game two was a complete turn-around for the Spartans (28-3, 12-1 SSC). Ania Ruiz dominated play t the net with eight kills as the Spartans out-hit the Bucs .225 to .103.

Game three offered more of the same, with the Spartans pounding out 20 kills and hitting .447, while Barry hit .179. Kayla Mora and Ericka Womack each had five kills. Playing without All-American middle Ferreira in the front row, the Bucs seemed out of sorts.

In game four, Ferreira returned to the front row and sparked the Bucs with four kills, but it was too little, too late as the Spartans gutted out a 30-27 win and the match.

Ruiz led all hitters with 24 kills and Mora added 14 for the Spartans. Ferrarezi had 14 kills to lead Barry. Gretchen Naruta led the Spartans with 58 assists, while Daniela Lanza directed the Bucs' attack with 42.

Barry closes out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Eckerd at 4:00 pm and then will await word on the NCAA South Region. The Bucs, ranked #1 in the region are expected to be named the host site for the tournament.
