18th Athletic Awards Banquet

1-General | 4/22/2002 12:42:00 PM

The Barry University Athletic Department celebrated its 18th annual Sports Awards Banquet Monday, April 22 at the Signature Grand in Fort Lauderdale. Awards were presented to athletes from every sport and the volleyball team received their championship rings.

Senior soccer player Jacobi Goodfellow was named the Male Athlete-of-the-Year and sophomore volleyball player Karla Bersano was named the Female Athlete-of-the-Year.

Goodfellow led the Buccaneers to a school-record .861 winning percentage (14-1-3), earning third-team NSCAA All-America honors. He led a defense which limited opponents to a 0.74 goals against average, second-lowest total in school history, and eight shutouts, third best total in school history. He was chosen to participate in the Umbro Select Tournament in February and was drafted by Hampton Roads of the "A" league.

Bersano led the Buccaneers to the 2002 National Championship, leading the team with 458 kills and fourth on the team in hitting percentage (.287). She also led team in service aces (45) and digs (341). She was named SSC Player of the Week once, First-Team All-SSC, First-Team All-South Region, First-Team Daktronics All-American, Second-Team Volleyball Monthly All-American. She earned spots on the All-South Region Tournament Team and the All-National Tournament Team.

Tennis swept the Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year, with Erik Holubec winning for the men and Victoria Courmes taking the women's award.

Holubec is a senior member of the men's tennis team. He has assisted his peers by serving as a learning center tutor in accounting for the past two years. His academic work has placed him on the dean's list twice and on the athletic director's honor roll once. A high level of motivation in the demanding field of accounting led him to a very successful internship in New York City over the past summer. The co-captain for the past two years, he helped make it possible, especially in doubles play, for the Bucs to qualify for NCAA tournament play for the past three years.

Courmes is one of the top scholars at Barry. In four semesters, her outstanding GPA has placed her on the president's list for three semesters and the dean's list for one semester. She has been a stalwart on the women's tennis team for the past three years. Her overall record includes an 18-3 in singles this spring, SSC player of the week three times; All-SSC two years running, and including this season she is three-time singles and doubles All-American.
