Box Score TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry University women's volleyball team surrendered to the 13th ranked Tampa Spartans 3-2 earlier this afternoon in Sunshine State Conference action.
Without the hitting experience of middle blocker
Fernanda Ferreira during the first three games of the match, the Buccaneers walked away winning game one 30-20, but fell in games two and three 30-20 and 30-22.
However, after recouping from a slight knee injury suffered during warm-ups, Ferreira return in game four to lead the Bucs to a 30-24 victory to send the match into a decisive game five. Despite the added enthusiasm with Ferreira back in the lineup, the Buccaneers were not able to hold on as the Spartans took the final game 15-13 to win the match 3-2.
Karla Bersano collected a team-high 21 kills to lead the Bucs while also posting a .235 attack percentage.
Rochelle Magill posted her best performance of the season with 18 kills, a .325 attack percentage and a match-high 17 digs, while
Melissa Lehman finished with a match-high .714 hitting percentage.
The Spartans had four players registering double-digits in kills. Ania Ruiz led the way with 24, while Ericka Womak, Amber Langston and Kristen Richardson posted 15, 12, and 10 respectively.
Although the Buccaneers posted a .256 team attack percentage to the Spartans .202, the Spartan offense collected 75 kills to the Bucs 69.
The Buccaneers fell to 15-7 overall and 9-2 in the SSC, while the Spartans improved to 22-6 overall and 11-0 in the SSC. With the win, the Spartans have clinched the 2002 Sunshine State Conference title. The Bucs will return to action on Tuesday on the road playing Lynn at 7 pm.
