Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The #2 Christian Brothers University women soccer team (22-1-0) squeaked by the #5 Barry University women's soccer team (18-1-0) earlier this afternoon 2-1 in the NCAA South Regional Championship hosted by Barry University at Buccaneer Field.
The Barry Buccaneers scored first on a chip shot from
Emelie Karlsson at 28:23, but the momentum soon changed when Christian Brothers' midfielder Lauren Carpenter evened the score 1-1 with 22 seconds remaining in the first half. The Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers continued their attack in the second half when Anna Rask fired a shot from 30 yards to give CBU a 2-1 advantage at 50:08.
"I think when they scored with 12 seconds to go in the first half and five minutes into the second half, it took away some of our momentum," head coach Kyllene Carter-Weiss said. "We played on our heels in the second half, but overall we played well."
Both teams were even in shots with 15 apiece, but it was CBU's Jennifer Simon that made the difference. She collected eight total saves, including one key deflection early in the first half. Simon came into the game prepared for Barry's potent offense.
"It's pretty hard where you go from games that you get no shots to games where you know it's going to be tight and lots of shots," Simon said. "Getting a good warm-up with the forwards you get some quality shots."
An intense game from the opening kickoff, Christian Brothers head coach Gareth O'Sullivan knew the competition would be tough and had to take some chances after losing the team's top gun Missy Gregg due to injury in the first half.
"I thought Barry was the better team during the first 30-35 minutes of the game, but in the last 10 minutes of the first half we started to create some chances." O'Sullivan said. In the second half, we shook things up a bit and it paid off with another goal."
Christian Brothers took the 2-1 advantage to the final buzzer for the NCAA South Region Championship victory, but O'Sullivan knew he had faced a good Barry team.
"I think Barry proved tonight they were a great team," O'Sullivan said. "It's just a shame the south region has two teams of this caliber that both can't advance. It's just unfortunate someone has to go home at this stage."
Christian Brothers will move on to the NCAA Quarterfinals and play North Florida in Jacksonville who had defeated Kennesaw 5-4 earlier this afternoon.
Barry concludes their season with an impressive 18-1-0 record and their 14th NCAA Division II Championship appearance, which is also a new NCAA record. Weiss is proud of her team, but she certainly was not ready for it to be over.
"It was a great season and we had a lot of successful games. I'm just not ready for the season to be over," Weiss said.
