Box Score ST. LEO, Fla.--Undefeated Barry University shocked Saint Leo University with two goals in the initial 2:59 of the Sunshine State Conference women's soccer match Friday afternoon and went on to post a 6-0 victory over the Lions.
Olga Vargas scored 1:05 into the match on an assist from
Emelie Karlsson. Vargas finished with two goals on the day, scoring her team's fifth after 54:40 of action.
Britt Miazgowicz earned the assist.
The Bucs left the field at intermission with a four-goal lead thanks to goals by
Melissa Behrle (assisted by
Tiina Saario) and Pam McDonald (assisted by
Emelie Karlsson) in the final 5:24 of the first half.
Colleen Gramlich's unassisted goal with 14:18 to play finished out Barry's offensive performance.
Barry out-shot Saint Leo 18-8 and had five corner kicks to four for the Lions.
Saint Leo let its one golden opportunity to score slip away, trailing 2-0 midway through the first half. Freshman forward Sarah Wright found herself unmarked about five yards in front of the net, but her chip shot went over the cross bar.
Johanna Fischer made three saves and earned her 11th shutout of the season. She is one shutout away from tying Carilyn Hormilla's school record set in 1989. Amber Ferrol had five saves for the Lions.
Barry now stands 8-0 in league play and 13-0 overall, while the Lions fell to 0-5-2 and 1-8-2. The Bucs return to action on Friday, October 18, hosting Tampa at 7:00 pm.
