Overtime Thriller Sends Barry Into NCAA Division II Sweet 16

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss.-After being pushed to overtime, the Barry Buccaneers stormed past the Rollins College Tars 74-67 in the NCAA Division II South Regional in Cleveland, Miss., Friday night.

"Down the stretch, we just wanted it more," Barry guard Kaycee Kapels said. "We wouldn't let it slip through our fingers again."

The Buccaneers looked in charge in the first half. With the score tied 13-13 with 9:16 left in the frame, the Bucs scored 10 straight points to go up 23-13,then extended the lead to 31-17 at the half. The Bucs held the Tars to only 21.4 percent shooting in the half.

"We just wanted to keep their shooters in check," Buccaneer coach Jan Allen said. "We put bigger bodies on their shooters and it seemed to throw them off track."

In the second half, Rollins showed why they are three-time defending Sunshine State Conference champions, slowly cutting into the lead until they tied the game 48-48 on a three-pointer from Shannon Pranger with 4:40 left in the half.

Barry stretched the lead back to five points twice, but could not shake the relentless Tars. Jaida Williams hit a pair of free throws with :06 seconds left in the game to put Barry up 59-56. But a Pranger three-pointer with one tick left on clock sent the game into the extra period.

In the overtime, Barry found some gas left in the tank, hitting nine of 10 from the free throw line and holding the Tars without a field goal.

Barry also got two huge three-pointers in the overtime. Holiday's at 1:29 gave the Bucs a 66-63 lead and Mandy Sterling's with 1:05 on the clock put Barry up 69-65.
