Box Score MIAMI, Fla.—Barry University's
Mike Lupton scored a goal with less than one minute remaining to pay back St. Thomas as the Buccaneers claimed a 3-2 win over the Bobcats Tuesday afternoon at the St. Thomas Soccer Complex.
Last season, the Bobcats used a goal from Stefan Radlund with 15 seconds left in the game to beat the Buccaneers. This year, the last-second heroics went to the Buccaneers.
St. Thomas jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Fernando Valenzuela scored in the sixth minute and Christian Ocampo added another score in the 34th. Both goals came on assists from Radlund.
The Buccaneers closed the gap to 2-1 with four minutes remaining in the period.
James Ryan's thrown in found
Greg Jehs in the box and Jehs tapped the ball in.
With the margin 2-1 and 13:49 remaining, St. Thomas' Jaime Villacis was called for his second yellow card and sent off. Then nine minute later, Mario Concha and Neil Kirby were also ejected following a foul by Kirby. On the ensuing free kick,
Marco Velez placed the ball on the far post and
Thiago Vasconcelos headed a shot home to knot the game at 2-2.
With the Buccaneers holding a three-man advantage, the Bobcats were unable to mark all of Barry's attackers, freeing up Lupton to score the winning goal. Jehs pushed the ball up the middle of the field and
Alen Marcina crossed the ball into Lupton in the box for the goal.
Buccaneer goalie Willie Leiste earned his first college win in relief of starter
Ron Goguen. Leiste did not allow a goal, making one save. STU's Jorgen Gunnarsson had six saves for the Bobcats as Barry held a 19-10 advantage in shots.
Buccanner head coach
Steve McCrath tied Ian Martin as the winningest coaches in Barry men's soccer history. Martin won 44 games from 1988-92. The win was McCrath's 44th at Barry.
The Buccaneers travel to Pensacola, Fla. this weekend to face the West Florida Argonauts on Friday and the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers on Sunday.
