Danny Wheelan joined the Barry University women’s soccer team as the full-time assistant coach in 2014 after spending the previous two years as the graduate assistant at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.
In four seasons with the Bucs, Wheelan helped the team to a 46-12-8 mark, including 26-4-5 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Bucs won SSC regular season titles in 2014 and 2015, along with the 2015 SSC Tournament championship. Barry won the South Region title in 2015 as well, advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since 2003.
In his first season with the Bucs, he helped head coach Denise Brolly keep Barry at the top of the Sunshine State Conference as the Bucs went 7-0-1 for the second straight season. Lavinia Nkomo was named SSC Player of the Year and an All-American by both Daktronics and the NSCAA. Katie Turner was named co-Defensive Player of the Year in the league, while Christy Grimshaw was tabbed as the circuit's Freshman of the Year.
Barry made it it three straight in 2015, as the Bucs won the Sunshine State Conference regular season title for the third straight year, despite taking their first conference loss in three seasons. They improved on their previous preformance, however, by winning the SSC Tournament for the first time since 2003 and went on to claim the South Region title.
A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, Wheelan was a member of the Scotland Schoolboys Under-18 National team before coming to the US to play collegiate soccer in 2003.
Wheelan was a four-year starter and two-year captain at NCAA Division I Loyola University-Maryland where he garnered all-conference honors and was a member of two MAAC regular season title winning sides. After graduation, he returned to Scotland where he played semi-professionally and began his coaching career.
Wheelan has coached at camps in the US as well as at the high school and youth level in Edinburgh. He currently holds the NSCAA Advanced National and National Diplomas as well as coaching diplomas from the Scottish Football Association for Kids Level 1,2,3, Youth Level 1,2,3, Goalkeeping Level 1, and a special topics diploma in Coaching Footballers with Disabilities.
While at Loyola, he graduated with a degree in International Business in 2007 and completed his Master of Business Administration degree from Bloomsburg University in the summer of 2014.
