Nick Johnson

Nick Johnson was named head coach at Barry University in July 2017.

In 2018-19, Johnson led the Bucs to a second-place finish at the Sunshine State Conference Regatta. The Bucs finished second in the Varsity 8 race and fourth in the V4. Fielding a pair of V4 boats at The Head of the Charles, the Bucs came in second and 17th. Six rowers, Sarolta Adonyi, Alejandra Alonso, Michelle Etchebaster-Martins, Alexa Kalinowski, Tara Marinkovic and Jessika Scholz, were named CRCA Scholar All-America.

In his first season as head coach with the Buccaneers in 2017-18, Johnson guided the Varsity 8 boat to the NCAA Division II Championships. The Bucs' 8 finished sixth at the national regatta. Barry's Varsity 4 went unbeaten in Division II during the season. The Bucs captured the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association title as the Varsity 4 won its race in 7:36.00. The Buccaneers finished second at the Sunshine State Conference regatta as the Varsity 4 won the league championship in 7:22.92. The Varsity 8 boat was the SSC runner-up in 6:44.40. Barry's 4+ completed its unbeaten season against Division II opponents when it won the Dad Vail Grand Finals with a time of 7:24.096. Barry's 8+ was third at Dad Vail, finishing in 6:34.537. Alejandra Alonso and Katrina Lasaite were named All-Americans. Johnson was named the SSC Coach of the Year, and the Varsity 4 was selected as the SSC co-Boat of the Year.

In 2016-17, Johnson served as the Bucs assistant coach, helping guide them to a win in the Head of the Charles Collegiate 4+ event, a third place finish at the Sunshine State Conference Championships and fifth place finishes in the Varsity 8+ at both the Dad Vail Regatta and NCAA Championships. He also oversaw the recruiting efforts that yielded one of the largest freshman classes in program history.

Prior to Barry, Johnson had over 12 years of coaching experience with multiple teams at the junior, club and masters levels.

Johnson rowed at Virginia Tech from 1997-2000. He led his Lightweight 8+ crew to the program's first ever medal at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. His team also won medals at the Big East, Atlantic 10 and Mid-Atlantic Championship regattas, and became the first in the program's history to receive an invitation to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, in addition to earning a national ranking.

Johnson holds a Level III coaching certification from USRowing, and has attended its advanced clinic several times. He also has attended the Joy of Sculling coaching clinic.

Johnson graduated in 2000 from Virginia Tech with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He lives in Miami Beach with his girlfriend, Katie Bond, who rowed for the University of Central Florida.
