Fred Bonal was hired as the assistant coach of the men's tennis program at Barry University on Nov. 18, 2013. He assists in player development, on-court coaching, recruiting and administrative duties.
In 2022, the Bucs won their third straight NCAA Division II National Championship. The Bucs went 22-5, earning a share of the Sunshine State Conference regular season title and captured the SSC Tournament and NCAA South Regional Championships on their way to the national title.
Bonal was named the ITA South Region and National Assistant Coach of the Year as the Bucs claimed their second-straight NCAA Division II national title in 2021. Barry completed the abbreviated season 13-0, 6-0 in the SSC, and won the conference regular season title, the SSC Tournament and the NCAA South Region.
In 2020, the Bucs were 6-1 before the season was suspended due to the pandemic.
Barry went 26-1 in 2019, winning the SSC regular season and tournament titles on their way to the NCAA Divsion II National Championship.
Bonal coached a team in 2018 that finished 25-3, settling for the NCAA Division II national runner-up for the second straight season. Barry won the Sunshine State Conference Tournament and South Region championships. Bonal coached a pair of singles All-Americans in Pierre Montrieul, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Player to Watch, and Carlos Gomez.
In 2017, Bonal helped guide the Bucs to a national runner-up finish, following a 26-2 season. Barry won the SSC regular season and postseason titles, while also capturing the NCAA South Region championship. Ahmed Triki became the program's first four-time All-American in singles and doubles. He also became the SSC's first four-time First Team all-conference selection in singles and doubles, and broke the school record for doubles victories with 84. Triki was named the ITA National Senior Player of the Year, while Nico Dreer was named the ITA National Most Improved Senior. Triki was named the SSC Player of the Year for the third time. Pierre Montrieul and Carlos Gomez earned All-American honors. Gomez was named the SSC Freshman of the Year.
Bonal helped coach the Buccaneers to the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship. Barry went 26-0, winning the title in Suprise, Ariz. It was the second time in Bonal's tenure at Barry the Bucs went unbeaten to win the national championship.
In 2014, Bonal was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He helped the Buccaneers go 25-3, advancing to the NCAA semifinals.
Bonal spent a year at Barry as a volunteer assistant coach in 2012-13. He helped coach the Buccaneers to a national championship in 2013 when the team went 29-0 to complete first first unbeaten season in school history in any sport.
Bonal coached 20 years in France at Bordeaux Club, where he was in charge of the First Division Junior and Senior competition. He also worked with the WTA and ATP in France for five years. He worked with Top 20 player Ronald Agenor in an instructional capacity for a year-and-a-half in 1994-95.
After moving to the United States, he worked with Tarik Benhabiles, Andy Roddic's former coach, from 2005-08 in Key Biscayne, Fla. During that time, Bonal worked with 10 players ranked among the top 50-250 in the world. In 2009, he began coaching junior players on his own in Hollywood, Fla.
Bonal competed in a couple ATP tournaments in Bordeaux.
He graduated with a master's degree in engineering from Bordeaux Sports University in Bordeaux, France in 2002. He received an undergraduate diploma from the French Federation of Tennis in 1998 after working for 10 years as a competition coach. He worked for the FFT, and taught independently during that 10-year period.
