Marcelo Huarte joined the coaching staff in the fall of 2016, assisting with both the men's and women's golf programs. He is responsible for player development, recruiting and administrative duties.
In 2017-18, Huarte was part of the men's coaching staff that advanced to the national semifinals at the NCAA Championship after the Buccaneers finished second in the stroke play portion of the tournament. The Bucs won their first match play quarterfinal since 2014. On the women's side, Barry finished fifth at the NCAA Championship. Tilda Larsson was named Women's Golf Coaches Association Division II Player of the Year after winning a school-record four tournaments and tying for the lead after regulation in another. Larsson, Josefina Foa Torres and Noemie Paré each earned All-America honors.
In his first coaching season at Barry, Huarte helped lead the women's team to the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship. The Buccaneers won a school-record five tournaments, including the NCAA South Super Regional. Charlotte Puts was named the WGCA Freshman of the Year, while she joined Larsson and Paré in earning All-America honors. Barry won three straight tournaments during the 2016-17 season. On the men's side, Barry finished No. 3 in the country. The Buccaneers won the NCAA Stroke Play Tournament, and finished tied for fifth at the national championships after advancing to match play. Barry also won the Sunshine State Conference Championship, and claimed its own Battle at the Shores. Niclas Weiland won two tournaments to earn First-Team All-America honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America.Â
Huarte, who closed out his stellar career in 2014, was part of a pair of NCAA National Championships in 2013 and 2014, and earned honorable mention All-America recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America as a sophomore in 2012. Playing 107 rounds in 37 tournaments for his career, he carded a 75.02 stroke average and seven rounds in the 60s, including a low round of 65 in the 2012 Buccaneer Invitational.
After graduation, he spent two years as a touring professional, mostly on the West Florida Golf Tour. In 12 starts, he recorded four top-15 finishes. He also played the qualifying school for the European Tour in Portugal and the Latin America q-school. During that period, he also worked for golf giant Srixon/Cleveland, educating sales associates on the latest technology and promotions.
Huarte graduated from Barry in June of 2014 with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
