Meet the Provost

13589Dr. John Murray

Provost of Barry University, and Professor of Psychology

JDMurray@Barry.edu

On behalf of the Division of Academic Affairs, I want to warmly welcome you to Barry University. By now, you hopefully know that Barry is an amazing university. We offer academic programming at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with a main campus in the heart of South Florida. This programming spans across the classic academic disciplines to professional programs. Currently, nearly 8,000 students are enrolled in all of Barry’s programs combined.

Most students do not know about the role of the Provost. He or she is the Chief Academic Officer of a college or university, the individual who administers over all academic programs. In most universities, the college or school deans report directly to the Provost and discuss what program offerings best fit the mission of the university. At Barry, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is subsumed within the Division of Academic Affairs; in other words, the Athletic Director (Mr. Mike Covone) reports directly to me.

I have a passion for working in a university environment that supports our students holistically, which means that we want students to develop their minds, bodies and spirits. Inspired by the four Core Commitments of Knowledge and Truth, Inclusive Community, Social Justice and Collaborative Service, the faculty and staff work with students to create global citizens who are knowledgeable, ethical, and moral human beings. It is my goal as Provost to interlace this goal through every endeavor in academic affairs, which includes athletics.

We have an athletic staff, headed by Athletic Director Mike Covone, who are dedicated servant leaders. Our teams are not only successful on the field, but also in the classroom. We use our beautiful and stimulating Miami location to offer the best academic and athletic experiences to our student-athletes.

Please visit or contact me. My office is in LaVoie 113, and I make it my practice to engage with the work of our academic teams, both as teams and as individual students.

Best of luck and many blessings on your journey through Barry University.
