Women's Basketball Opens The New Year With Win Over Tars

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. --  The Barry Buccaneers opened 2026 with a 62-48 win over the Rollins Tars in a Sunshine State Conference women's basketball game on Cesar Odio Court on Saturday.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Tars stormed out of the gate in hte first period, scoring the first eight points of the game before the Bucs got on the board. They took an 11-point lead with 3:41 to play on a basket by McKenna Murphy. Kornelia Ignesrka hit a three-pointer for the Bucs to trim the lead to eight at the break. | Rollins 17, Barry 9
  • 2Q - Barry quickly flipped the script in the second period with an 11-0 run to start the frame. Kendall Parker hit a pair of triples, Ignerska had another and Akvile Babraityte got the ball rolling with a layup. The Tars rebuilt their lead, including hitting 4-of-4 from the line in the last two minutes to take a five-point edge into the loccker room.  | Rollins 35, Barry 30
  • 3Q -  Barry again started the period on a roll, tying the game in the first minute on a Parker layup. The  Tars did not hit a field goal until the 5:33 mark. But with the Tars up by three after the three-pointer by Claire Erickson, Barry went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 45-37 lead. After a free throw by the Tars, Ignerska nailed a long three-pointer at the buzzer to give Barry a 10-point advantage heading the the final period.  | Barry 48, Rollins 38
  • 4Q - It was the Tars who started hot in the fourth period, cutting the lead in half on a three-pointer by Faith Newton and a layup by Grace Craig. But that was a close as they would get. Barry scored 14 of the next 15 points, including five from Parker and four from Andreonia Doe. An Izzy Brenzil layup with 1:08 to play gave the Bucs their biggest lead at 62-44 and the Tars score the last two buckets to make the final. | Barry 62, Rollins 48

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Parker led three Bucs in double figures with 13 points, hitting 3-of-5 from three-point range. 
  • Ignerska chipped in 12 on four triples of her own and Babraityte added 11.
  • Newton led the Tars with 17 points and Tara Murray had 10.
  • Barry held the Tars to just 18 points on 6-of-25 shooting in the second half.
  • Barry's team effort on the boards, led by eight from Brenzil, led the Bucs toa 42-37 edge on the glass. 
  • Grace Craig led Rollins with 12 rebounds, before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.
  • Barry's bench out-scored the Tars 16-4 and the Bucs led 30-16 in the paint.
  • It was the second win in a row for Barry, while Rollins has now lost all six conference games.

ON THE HORIZON:
The Bucs visit the Florida Southern Moccasins on Wednesday, Jan. 7 in Lakeland at Jenkins Field House.
