MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University men's basketball team announced the addition of former Miami Prep athlete Jose Benitez to the roster for the 2025-26 season.

"Jose brings a toughness and passion for the game that is a part of every winning culture," head coach Justin Furr said. "During his visit, it became very apparent that he embodies a selflessness that makes him who he is. His vision and feel will fit well into our offensive scheme, but his defensive mindset is what makes him special.  Barry University will benefit from Jose Benitez's presence. We are excited to welcome Jose and his family to Barry U."

Benitez, a 6-0 guard, returns to South Florida after playing for NCAA Division II Francis Marion as a freshman and the SunBelt's Southern Mississippi the last two seasons. Benitez started 18 games as a rookie at FMU, averaging 9.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. He pumped in a season-high 20 points against Belmont Abbey.

He transferred to Southern Miss for the next two years where his role changed to a reserve. In limited minutes across 33 games, he showed his strength as a defender with 17 steals in 221 minutes (2.8 steals per 36 minutes). Benitez also put up numbers that equate to 8.3 points, 3.7 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per 36 minutes.

"I chose Barry University because it felt like home the moment I stepped on campus," Benitez said. "The coaching staff believes in my potential, the program has a strong winning culture, and I know this is where I can grow both as a player and a person.  My top priority is to do whatever is needed to bring a championship to BarryU this season!"

The Buccaneers are coming off a 12-17 season, that ended in a Sunshine State Conference Tournament appearance.
