Saturday Sweep for Volleyball in Melbourne

The Bucs pick up their 11th sweep of the season

MELBOURNE, Fla.   The tour of Florida this week ended at the Clemente Center on the campus of Florida Tech for the Buccaneer women's volleyball team. Barry swept the Panthers and pick up their 11th sweep and 20th win of the season. It was a battle between two of the best offensive players in the conference as Valeriya Kozlova faced off against Cordelia Kearns, both the top kills peer set getters.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - The first set went like many other for the Bucs as they had to battle for the win. There were 17 ties and nine lead changes alone in the first. The final tie was at 22-22, a 3-1 run ended it aa Valeriya Kozlova had two kills and a block with Ester Pushkarov to close it out. Kozlova had 11 kills in the set off 17 attempts with just one error for a .588 hit percentage. | Barry 25, FIT 23
  • Set Two -  The first play was a 1v1 against Kearns and Kozlova, the Buccaneer freshman won the battle with a block solo. Barry had full control of the set, leading it by as much as eight, at 16-8. Barry cruised to the end as Varvara Osychenko closed out the set with a kill. Veronika Eremeeva led the set with six kills on 10 attempts and no errors for a .600 swing percentage. The Buccaneers picked up six blocks in the set to oforce a .070 average. | Barry 25, FIT 19
  • Set Three - Eremeeva continued in the third, picking up the first point on a kill. After trailing by as much as six, the Bucs slowly crawled back into the game and tied it up at 15. Barry then went on a 6-1 run that tilted the scoreboard for the final time in their favor. Kozlova picked up the final kill for Barry to close out the sweep. She once again led the set with 11 kills and hitting .474. The defense had four blocks forcing a .161 hitting percentage. | Barry 25, FIT 20

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Valeriya Kozlova picked up her 15th double-digit kill performance.
  • Her 26 kills ties for third most inn a three-set match for Barry
  • Sofya Sinkova had nine kills to tie her career-high, while adding a block and three digs.
  • Veronika Eremeeva had eight kills and a season-high 12 digs.
  • Ivana Žujovic led the block party with five.
  • Thalia Iglesias had her 10th career double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs.
  • Petra Brkicic secured her second straight 30-assist match.
  • Gaia Riedmüller had 19 digs to lead the back row.
  • Statistically, Barry won every category except service aces.

The Buccaneers will head back home and take on top-ranked Tampa from the Health and Wellness Center on Friday, November 14.
