Volleyball Edged By Alabama-Huntsville And Anderson

HUNTSVILLE, AL. - Concluding their lone trip outside the Sunshine State during the 2023 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of matches in the UAH Invitational, the 12th-ranked Barry University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) decision to host University of Alabama-Huntsville before ending the trip with a 3-2 (12-25, 25-21, 25-18, 20-26, 15-13) setback to Anderson University.

SUMMARY:

Alabama-Hunstville
  • Set 1 - Alabama-Huntsville used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 16-11. Barry rallied to get within one at 17-16 before a 3-0 response by UAH ended the comeback effort with the Chargers keeping the lead at two or higher for the rest of the set.
  • Set 2 - Barry overcame an early 6-3 deficit behind a 6-1 run to take a 9-7 lead before the host responded with a 5-0 run to take a 12-9 edge. The Bucs knotted the score at 12-all, only for an 8-1 run by Alabama-Huntsville creating a 20-13 score.
  • Set 3 - Barry responded to a 2-0 start by the Chargers with a 3-0 run to take the early lead, holding onto it until a 3-0 UAH run pushed them ahead 13-12. The Bucs reclaimed the lead at 17-15 behind a 4-0 run before a 6-1 stretch by the hosts propelled them to a 21-18 lead. 
Anderson
  • Set 1 - Barry scored the opening two points of the match and never trailed during the first set, creating a double-digit advantage at 17-7 and leading by as many as 13 during the stanza.
  • Set 2 - Anderson broke open at 14-14 second set behind a 5-0 run, holding the Bucs without a run greater than two for the rest of the frame to knot the overall score at 1-1.
  • Set 3 - After splitting the initial 10 points of the third set, Anderson used a 3-0 run to take an early 8-5 lead. Barry rallied to get within one at 13-12 and again and 15-14 only for a 4-1 stretch by Anderson extending their advantage to 19-15. The Trojans ended the stanza on a 4-0 run.
  • Set 4 - Barry scored the opening three points of the fourth set and never trailed, using a 5-0 run midway through the stanza to take a 17-10 lead and kept it above three for the rest of the stanza.
  • Set 5 - Facing an 11-6 deficit in the tiebreaker fifth set, the Bucs used a 5-0 run to knot the score at 11-all, trading the ensuing two points to keep the score tied before a 3-1 Anderson run ended the contest.

NOTEWORTHY:

Alabama-Huntsville Anderson
  • Osychenko recorded her first collegiate double-double behind a 19-kill, 15-dig outing with five service aces and two assisted blocks.
  • Perez boasted a season-high 22 digs and five service aces.
  • Akopova boasted a game-high 21 kills with two assisted blocks.
  • Iglesias added 27 assists and 10 digs for a double-double on top of two aces.
  • Zujovic and Jeyhlen Thomas each assisted on three blocks.
  • Barry served 13 aces compared to five for Anderson.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneers begin Sunshine State Conference play on Friday, Sept. 15 with a 7 p.m. matchup against Palm Beach Atlantic.
