Baseball Hammers Ichabods

Bucs improve to 5-1

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers used the long ball to hammer the Washburn Ichabods 9-8 in baseball action at Feinbloom Field on Sunday.

SUMMARY:

  • T1: The Ichabods jumped out on top with a long ball of their own in the first inning. Trey Adams belted a two-run homer, scoring Trevor McCollum who had singled. | Washburn 2, Barry 0
  • B1: Christian Maceda got one of the runs back for the Bucs in the bottom of the inning. He was hip by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on a fly ball by Joe Stella. | Washburn 2, Barry 1
  • T3: In the third, Adams walked and went to second on a bunt. He then scored on a pair of wild pitches from Barry starter Anthony Bennetti. | Washburn 3, Barry 1
  • B3: the Bucs took the lead in the third. Savi Delgado was hit by a pitch leading off and stole second. Maceda followed with a single to right, to drive him in. Maceda stole second and went to third on a passed ball by catcher Otto Jones. After a walk and stolen base by Evan Wickeri, Jake Ogden laced a single up the middlle to score two runs. | Barry 4, Washburn 3
  • T4: The Ichabods re-took the lead in the fourth. Mickey Coyne and Connor Scott walked with one out and Easton Bruce blasted a three-run homer. | Washburn 6, Barry 4
  • T5: Washburn tacked on another run in the fifth. Cal Watkins doubled off the batter's eye in center and scored on a single by Ian Book. But with Cal Savage at second and Book at first with no outs, Barry turned a triple play to end the inning. Jones popped his bunt attempt up and Derek Cabrera laid full out to catch it near the third-base line. He threw from his seat to Delgado who relayed it over to Jarrett May at first for the triple play. | Washburn 7, Barry 4
  • B5: The Bucs broke out the big bats in the fifth. Maceda and Wickeri led off with doubles, leaving runners at second and third. Both came home on Joe Stella's first homer of the year. Sean Shelly and Matthew Menendez tacked on solo homers to put Barry up. | Barry 9, Washburn 7
  • T6: Adams drove in Bruce, who had reached on a fielder's choice to trim the lead to one. | Barry 9, Washburn 8

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Cabrera (1-0) earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on seven hits, but did not walk a batter and struck out four.
  • Nick Vanderhoef, pitching for the since May 1, 2021, worked the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one to earn his first save.
  • Chase Torkelson (0-1) took the loss and the brunt of the Bucs power surge. He allowed five runs on five hits, all of them for extra bases in the fifth inning.
  • Maceda and Ogden each had two hits for the Bucs, who actually out out-hit by the Ichabods 13-8.
  • Maceda scored three runs, stealing three bases and added a double.
  • Stella drove in four for Barry, with a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly.
  • Adams led Washburn with three hits, including a homer and three RBI. Bruce also drove in three.
  • Vanderhoef was the third different Buccaneer pitcher to record a save this season.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneers' home stand continues with a three-game set to open Sunshine State Conference play next weekend on Friday and Saturday against Embry-Riddle.
