Men's Soccer Opens With a Win Over Patriots

Simoniello with a goal and an assist in the win

FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Petsa Ivanovic era of Buccaneer men's soccer got off on the right foot with a 2-0 win over the Francis Marion Patriots on Thursday at Hartzler Field in Florence, S.C.

SUMMARY:

  • 42:52 - Barry got on the board just before halftime. Michele Villanova crossed the ball into the box to Juan Simoniello who chested it down to Nicolas Villalobos who beat Patriots' keeper Andrea Scapolo for the goal. | Barry 1, FMU 0
  • 55:00 - Just 10:00 into the second half, FMU's Paul Sapper was sent off after a serious foul on Barry's Jean Claude Consol. Consol had to leave the game and the Patriots played the rest of the match down a man.
  • 75:12 - The Patriots nearly knotted the game after winning a corner kick. FMU put the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was waved off after a offside call. 
  • 89:41 - In the final minute, the Patriots got pushed too far forward trying for the equalizer and the Bucs made them pay. Jordi Ramon sent a long pass over the top to Simoniello, who beat Scapolo off the dribble and scored into the empty net. | Barry 2, FMU 0

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Simoniello had three points in his first game as a Buccaneer, assisting on the game-winner in the first half and adding an insurance goal late.
  • The Bucs completed the clean sheet, despite Consol missing the last 35:00 minutes after the red card.Consol had two saves in picking up the win, while Mateo Torchio worked the final 35:00 minutes without facing a clean shot.
  • Barry dominated across the scoreboard, out-shooting FMU 15-4 and leading 8-2 in corner kicks.
  • Barry also picked up five yellow cards in the match, to one yellow and a red for the Patriots.
