HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bucs lost the doubles point for just the second time this season.
- Abidullin and Brocks rolled over Engelmann and Wang 6-2 at number two. Engelmann was playing without regular partner Helene Scholsen, who was unable to compete in the match.
- Moosbacher and Farfan, ranked fourth, battled back from an early 3-1 deficit to beat Boyar and Buntrock 6-4 at number three.
- It all came down to number one, where the top-ranked pair of Mae and Christine Canete eked out a 6-4 win over 3rd-ranked Khazan and Bosnjak, giving the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.
- But the Bucs depth in singles proved too much for the Bronchos as Barry was able to win all four of the finished singles matches.
- It started at number six where #28 Moosbacher, who stepped into the lineup with Scholsen out, steam rolled Buntrock 6-1, 6-1 to even the match.
- Farfan, who moved up from six to five, made equally short work of Brocks 6-0, 6-2 to give Barry its first lead.
- Engelmann, ranked #26, made a big statement that she deserves All-America honor again this year with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 win over eighth-ranked Christine Canete at number two.
- Bosnjak clinched the match with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Chadick at number four.
- The remaining matches went unfinished.
NOTEWORTHY
- The Bucs won their seventh overall national championship and fifth in a row.
- For Barry's overall athletic program, it is their 25th national championship and 20th since 2004.
- Barry moved past SIU-Edwardsville (1986-89) as the only team to win five straight titles in Division II women's tennis (2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022). The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the pandemic.
- Barry's seven titles tie BYU-Hawai'i for the second-most championships in Division II history, behind only Armstrong (8). Both Armstrong and BYU-Hawai'i have eliminated their athletic programs.
- The doubles results were the exact opposite of the match in the ITA Indoor championships, as the Bucs won at #1 and #2, but lost at #3 in Oklahoma.
- Engelman (2019, 2021-22) joins a select few Bucs to win three national championships in her career, along with Verena Schmid (2107-19), Zuza Maciejewska (2017-19), and Julie Razafindranaly (2018-19, 2021).
- Bosnjak, who has two with Barry, also won a pair of NAIA titles with Georgia Gwinnet.
- Barry has now beaten the Bronchos in all three meetings.
