Women's Basketball Falls In SSC Quarters

Bucs come up short against top-seeded Mocs

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The eighth-seeded Barry Buccaneers fell 89-71 to the top-seeded Florida Southern Moccasins in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night in Jenkins Fieldhouse.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Bucs shot out of the box in a hurry, behind nine points in nine minutes from Juhnae Richardson. A three-point play by Richardson with 0:50 seconds to go gave Barry a five-point lead, but the Mocs hit a final layup to cut it to three. | Barry 21, FSC 18
  • 2Q - Trailing by three with 8:24 left in the period, the Mocs went on a 17-3 run over the next five and a half minutes to take an 11 point lead, which they held through to the half. | FSC 41, Barry 30
  • 3Q - After Richardson hit a free throw to open the period, the Mocs scored 14 of the 19 points to up the lead to 18. The Bucs never got closer than 12 the rest of the way. | FSC 69, Barry 52
  • 4Q - Trailing by 19 with just over three minutes to play, the Bucs went on a 9-2 run, with six points from Harriet Swindells and a three-pointer by Ida Anderson to cut the lead to 12. But the Mocs went 6-for-6 from the line in the last 1:07 to seal the win. | FSC 89, Barry 71

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Richardson led the Bucs with 17 points, followed by 16 from Andersson. Carly Sanders had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and eight rebounds.
  • Camille Giardina had 30 points to lead the Mocs, while Anja Fuchs-Robetin added 25. Marta Aranda and Bekki Kalaydjiev each added 11. 
  • Andersson finished the season with a school-record 80 three-point field goals.
  • Nichel Tampa had 81 steals, the most for the Bucs since Princess Bailey had 88 in 2007-08.
