Men's Hoops Beats Rollins 76-61; Sweeps Season Series

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Tylan Birts has really come along in the last four games for the Buccaneers as Barry took down Rollins on Saturday afternoon 76-61 inside the Health & Sports Center. Birts led all scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds. The junior forward has reached the 20 point plateau in the last 3-of-4 games.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final:  Barry 76, Rollins 61
Records: Barry 14-9, 9-7 SSC, Rollins 9-16, 3-14 SSC
All-Time Series: Rollins leads 27-48

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"For the most part I think this was our best complete game this year, but we still have to fix a few things," Birts said. "We can play better," Birts added.

"I was really proud of our defensive effort," Bucs head coach Butch Estes said. "The effort and the intensity in which we played the entire 40 minutes was what we have to have if we expect to make a late run," Estes said.

"We took a timeout - I want to say around the eight-or-nine minute mark and we all said 'this is the best we've played all year'," Bucs assistant coach Bill Morosco said. We let them creep up a little in the end, but this is definitely something to build on," Morosco added.

SUMMARY:

  • The Bucs took advantage of a Rollins zone defense that continued leaving wide open shots at the free throw line for Barry. Birts, Evan Walshe and Marko Tomic all took turns flashing the middle of the zone, squaring up ready to shoot or drive in for a layup. Those quality looks led to a 51.6 shooting percentage in the first half for the Bucs. However, the Tars were still in the game only down 39-31 at the half.
  • Rollins appeared to move away from the zone defense in the second half, but the Buccaneers really smothered the Tars on defense and pounded the glass. Barry out-rebounded Rollins 46-32.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • David Moya had a career-high nine rebounds along with nine points and 3-for-4 shooting behind-the-arc.
  • In his first game back from injury, Walshe struggled offensively from the field, but contributed 32 tough minutes of defensive pressure and ball-handling relief for Barry.
  • After today's game, Daniel Mortensen is 19 points away from recording 1,000 for his career as a Buccaneer.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneers will travel to West Palm Beach on Wednesday, Feb. 20th to take on Palm Beach Atlantic for the final time this season. Barry dropped the first matchup at home 63-67 on January 16th. Tip-off is set for 7:00pm at Rubin Arena on Wednesday.
