CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Barry rowing continues its fall season this weekend, heading north for the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass., on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Buccaneers will compete with two entries in the collegiate fours event after securing automatic qualification in 2018 with a silver medal and 17th-place finish out of 40 entries.

"Last year we had two really good results, which earned us some prime starting positions for this year," head coach Nick Johnson said. "Starting too far back can really make your race a coin toss. The group has been working hard all fall, and this is one of our biggest events of the season, so I think we're ready to go."

Barry's two entries in the collegiate fours this year are part of 36 total crews, including conference opponents Florida Tech and Embry Riddle. This year's A crew consists of coxswain Stella Hoidn, Lana Sumner-Borema, Janika Koelblin, Maria Stampolkou and Zorica Mrdja. The B entry features coxswain Victoria Riddick, Tara Marinkovic, Chloe Boughrum, Saci Adonyi and Laura Wappelhorst. Adonyi, Koelblin and Stampolkou were members of the 2018 silver medal crew.

"The Charles is always a highlight for us," assistant coach Travis Day said. "Being able to go make a statement on a stage this big is a huge motivator during a long fall season. Top-half finishes for automatic qualification are always the foremost goals, but just like last year, gold medal contention is well within striking distance for this group."

First held in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta is the largest rowing event in the world by number of participating athletes, taking place on the Charles River which divides Boston and Cambridge. The 4,800-meter (three-mile) course starts at Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse, winding upstream through seven bridges, making five turns before finishing just past Cambridge Boat Club and the Eliot Bridge. This year's 55th edition will see competitors from 764 clubs and 25 countries, totaling over 11,000 athletes in 71 categories.

Following the Charles, Barry closes out the fall season on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Stetson Hatter Invitational in DeLand, Fla. The Bucs will face off with Stetson, Jacksonville and Nova Southeastern on Lake Beresford.
