MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University rowers
Alejandra Alonso and
Kotryna Lasaite were named All-Americans by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Saturday.
Alonso, a sophomore from Asuncion, Paraguay, earned First-Team honors, while Lasaite, a senior from Radviliskis, Lithuania, was a Second-Team selection in the award sponsored by Pocock.
"We are very proud of these two athletes, and how they represented Barry rowing this year," head coach
Nick Johnson said. "Both had a great year rowing in the V8, and were not only strong rowers, but solid team leaders."
Alonso and Lasaite rowed in the Varsity 8 that qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships. They were part of the 8 that finished third at the prestigious Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta with a time of 6:34.537. They were in the same boat that finished as the Sunshine State Conference Championships runner-up in 6:44.40.
"We are sad to see Kotryna's time as rower come to an end," Johnson said, "but are excited to see what Ale will continue to achieve, and who will try to fill Kotryna's shoes next year."
Alonso and Lasaite became the 18th and 19th All-Americans in Barry rowing history.
To earn the award, a student-athlete must have rowed in at least 75 percent of the season's races in a Varsity boat, meet all the requirements as defined by her institution, be nominated by her institution and have a head coach who is in good standing with the CRCA.
