BRADENTON, Fla. -- For Carolin Schmidt, it was a super day.
"Everything is super today," said the Buccaneers' first-year women's tennis player, whose 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles clinched the Sunshine State Conference Saturday at IMG Academy.
Schmidt beat Eliska Petrackova in straight sets to put away No. 5 Lynn in the top-ranked Bucs' 5-1 triumph. It was the second straight year Barry won the league tournament title at IMG, and the 11th time in the program's history. Head coach Avi Kigel has won eight of them.
Barry opened up with a blistering start, winning all three doubles matches, including a whitewash at the No. 1 spot when fourth-ranked Verena Schmid and Sonja Larsen beat the top-ranked team in the country, Klaudia Boczova and Petrackova, 8-1, in a commanding statement.
"The way we came out in doubles so focused and so on point was just a great thing to see," Kigel said. "We knew we were playing a really good team, and to be as sharp as we were in doubles was really great.
"The team is very confident. We know the road ahead of us. They're playing for one another. I think that's the X-factor."
INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Barry 5, Lynn 1
Records: Barry (23-0), Lynn (19-4)
DOUBLES:
- After Larsen and Schmid knocked off the No. 1 duo in the country, things got a little tighter. But the Bucs remained in control to sweep the pairs points.
- Forty ninth-ranked Zuza Maciejewska and Schmidt were 8-5 winners over Eleonora Liga and Federica Mordegan at the No. 3 position to make it 2-0.
- Forty fifth-ranked Julie Razafindranaly and Hannah Seizer pulled out an 8-6 victory over Diana Bogolii and Natalie Kallmunzerov at the middle position to ring it up.
- It is the 19th time this season Barry has swept doubles.
SINGLES:
- After Lynn retired immediately at No. 4 singles, handing Maciejewska a victory that moved Barry within a point of clinching, second-ranked Sonja Larsen got up a set on 63rd-ranked Bogolii at No. 3 before things started to slow down. Bogolii rallied, eventually taking a lead in the second set.
- Meanwhile Razafindranaly won the opening set against Liga at No. 6, but the Fighting Knights player came back to win the second.Â
- Seizer dropped the opening set to Mordegan, 7-5, and was tied 1-1 in the second at the No. 2 spot.
- Schmid, ranked 20th in the country, fell quickly to sixth-ranked Boczova, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1. That made it 4-1.
- Schmidt never thought her match would end at the No. 5 position. But when she noticed what was going on at No. 3 singles, she said to herself, "'OK Caro, you have to focus again.'"
- That she did, putting away the match to give Barry the title, and secure some t-shirts, a nap on the drive home and some ice cream to boot.
NOTEWORTHY:
- It was the second time Schmidt won at No. 5 singles to help Barry win SSC titles over Lynn this year. She did it in the regular season match to hand the Bucs their first league championship this season.
- Barry is 5-0 on neutral courts this season.
- The Buccaneers have won eight of the last nine SSC Tournament championships
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"I think that was super important. It's super cool. Right from the beginning, we were so successful. These are the matches we've been looking forward to. We want this type of match, where you have to focus and play your best match."
