Softball Drops Series Opener To Panthers

Florida Tech ran across 12 runs to take game one of the SSC series

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers saw their seven-game win streak snapped in a 12-2, five-inning loss to the Florida Tech Panthers in Sunshine State Conference softball action at Buccaneer Field on Friday night.

SUMMARY:

  • T2: Jessica Callahan got the Panthers started with a leadoff homer in the second. Makayla Palmer walked and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk by Shany Emerenciana. | Florida Tech 2, Barry 0
  • T3: Jessica Szrom keyed a five-run third inning for the Panthers with a three-run homer. Palmer and Emerenciana had RBI singles. | Florida Tech 7, Barry 0 
  • B3: The Bucs scored twice in the third. Brittany Phillips, who reached on an error, scored on a ground out by Taylor Checkley. Sam Busekrus, who singled, worked a double steal with Peyton Rawls for the other run.  | Florida Tech 7, Barry 2
  • T4: Vanessa Rubio and Alexus Smith each had a two-run double as the Panthers scored five more in the fourth.  | Florida Tech 12, Barry 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Geneva Santos (6-8) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 12 hits and four walks.
  • Melanie Murphy (7-5) went the distance to earn the win for the Panthers. She allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk.
  • Madison VonHagel and Santos had the other hits for the Bucs.
