Men's Hoops Ends 2018 with 95-68 Win Over Panthers

Milon Sheffield posted a career-high 20 points against Florida Tech.

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Buccaneers recorded an assist on their first 14 made field goals and finished with five players in double-figures during a 95-68 victory over the Florida Tech Panthers (6-5, 1-3 SSC) inside the Health & Sports Center in Miami Shores on Sunday afternoon. During the last game of 2018 for the Buccaneers, Milon Sheffield led the Bucs with a career-high 20 points on 6-for-8 shooting from three-point land. With the win, Barry moves to third place in the conference standings.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

With junior point guard David Moya unavailable today due to injury, Sheffield stepped right in and played well for the Bucs. "Our coaches always tell me to stay ready all the time, I just stepped in and did my part," Sheffield said. The sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida pitched in four rebounds and four assists.

"Milon was an walk-on when he first came here," Bucs head coach Butch Estes said. "His dad used to tell me - 'just give him a chance. Stick with him.' I thought [Milon] had an outstanding game today and it warms my heart when you have a guy who has a will to be good and will not accept momentary failure or find excuses and a reason to quit," Estes said. "I couldn't be happier for him."
 

SUMMARY:

  • The Buccaneers put heavy pressure on the Panthers in transition, finishing the first half with 15 fast break points, while holding FIT to zero transition points. 
  • Tylan Birts and Daniel Mortensen led the Bucs in the first half with 10 & 12 points a-piece. Birts nearly finished the game with a double-double - 12 points, nine rebounds. 
  • Leandro Allende finished with 12-of-his-17 points in the second half. The 17 points marks a season-high for the Puerto Rico native on 8-for-10 shooting.. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry had five players reach double-figures. The Bucs had six [players reach double-figures against Nova on November 28, 2018.
  • The Buccaneers won the battle in transition, outscoring the Panthers 25-3 in fast break points.
  • Barry finished the game with 24 assists on 37 made field goals. 

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs play their first game in the new year in Daytona Beach against the Embry-Riddle Eagles (8-7, 1-3 SSC) on Wednesday, January 2nd. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
