Women's Soccer Cruises To 2018 SSC Tournament Title

Bucs dominate Sharks 6-0 en route to their third tournament title

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The top-seeded Barry Buccaneers dominated the second-seeded Nova Southeastern Sharks 6-0 to win the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Tournament Championship at Buccaneer Field on Sunday. 

The Bucs scored three times in the first 10 minutes and held the sharks without a goal for just the second time this season. It is their third conference tournament title (2003 and 2015).

SUMMARY:

  • 2:15 - In the 3rd minute, Brittany Larosa sent a log cross in from the left side. Christy Grimshaw got on the end of it, popped the ball over the head of defender Brianna Paige and scored one-on-one against keeper Natalie Robayna.
  • 3:27 - Just over a minute later, Sarah Wignall sent the cross in from the left and Gabby Sanon got on the end of it. Unmarked inside the six-yard box, she slotted the ball in at the far post.
  • 10:06 - In the 11th minute, Grimshaw struck again. She worked a give-and-go with Wignall on the right side and blasted a shot in past Robayna from 21 yards out. 
  • 54:55 - In the 55th minute, Sanon fed Ellen Cederin near the top of the six-yard box. Cederin chested the ball down past defender Brian Paige and scored one-on-one against Robayna
  • 65:04 - Molly Sharpe got the first of two goals in the 66th minute. Cederin picked up a loose ball in the box with a quick touch Sharpe who scored charging in from 10 yards out.
  • 69:37 - Sharpe put the capper on the scoring in the 70th minute. Grimshaw sent the ball out wide to Sanon, who played the ball across the top of the six-yard box. Sharpe out-raced defender Amber Hamilton to the ball and ripped a shot past Robayna.

18350NOTEWORTHY:

  • The last time that Barry scored six goals was a 6-1 win over Eckerd on Oct. 9, 2011. The last time the Bucs won by at least six goals was a 9-0 win over Chowan on Oct. 22, 2010. 
  • Grimshaw was named the Most Outstanding Player of the conference tournament for the second time in her career. She was also the MOP of the 2015 Championship.
  • Grimshaw was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Molly Sharpe, Sarah Wignall, Ellen Cederin and Jade Adams. Jemma House, Brianna Paige, Emma Heikkila and Hannah Christophe from NSU, Chynna McGirt from Rollins and Guro Naess Berge of Embry-Riddle also made the team.
  • Though keeper Melanie Ziegner made a season-high seven saves, most the shots she faced came from outside the 18-yard box. Nonetheless, it was her eighth clean sheet in 16 games this season.
  • Robayna had three saves on the Bucs' nine shots on goal.

ON THE HORIZON:

The win gives the Bucs an automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament. The other bids, and host sites, will be announced at 6:30 pm, EST, on Monday, Nov. 5 on NCAA.com.
