WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"We put up a lot of runs today," head coach Sean Cotter said. "We worked the bases well and we had many contributions from the bench which was great. The pitchers also did a tremendous job of keeping the amount of runs allowed very low, and overall we had a really good performance. We still have a lot to work on but it's early, and we're really excited about this team and the season ahead."
SUMMARY:
Game 1
- T1: The Bucs racked in eight runs to set the bar high against the host Bobcats. Madison VonHagel, Peyton Rawls, Anieliese Palmeiro and Alayna Gallagher combined for seven RBI in the first. Another run was scored off of a throwing error by the St. Thomas defense, making it 8-0 Bucs.
- B1: St. Thomas got a little help with a throwing error by the Barry defense, allowing two runs to score. The Buccaneers also walked in a runner with bases loaded, making it 8-3 Barry.
- T3: Barry added three more runs to their lead, making it 11-3. Lynsey Duncan and Kristina Osorio each had an RBI. Barry swept game one in five innings due to the mercy rule, which occurs when a team is up by eight or more runs after the fifth inning.
Game 2
- T1: Osorio got things started for the Buccaneers with a grand slam in the top of the first inning, with the ball traveling against the wind over the left field wall, giving Barry the four-point lead.
- T2: Barry increased their lead to seven runs in the second. Heads up base running by Taylor Checkley allowed her to score from third, as Palmeiro was attempting to steal second after being walked. Gallagher was walked home with bases loaded, and Duncan tagged up on Rawls' sacrifice fly to left field, scoring to make it 7-0 Bucs.
- T4: Osorio wasn't the only Buc with a homer tonight, as VonHagel cranked a ball right at the opponent's scoreboard over in left field, increasing the lead to eight runs. Rawls scored on a passed ball in the fourth, and moments later Jordan Cooke scored from a beautifully place sacrificed bunt by Brittany Phillips, making it 10-0 Barry.
- T5: Barry sealed the day with three additional runs in the fifth inning, which later led to the second mercy rule of the day against the Bobcats. Duncan and Cooke each had RBI's.
