Men's Basketball Holds on Against Lynn, 72-68

Bucs bounce back from tough loss

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry's 19th-ranked men's basketball team survived a comeback scare from its arch-rival Wednesday night, beating Lynn, 72-68.

The Buccaneers built a double-digit lead early in the second half, but the Fighting Knights turned it up when Barry couldn't buy a basket to get within five late. The Bucs held on with a couple of late stops on the defensive end to bounce back from a tough loss on the weekend.

"We didn't play up to our expectations in the second half," said Barry forward Marko Tomic, following a 15-point, six-rebound, two-steal performance. "I was telling our guys, 'We can't be afraid of failure.'"

Barry was outscored 39-25 in the second half to turn an 18-point halftime lead into a thrilling finish.

"When they get going, they're tough to stop," said Bucs guard Sawyer Glick, who finished with 15 points. "It's a really tough conference. Every game is tough."

SUMMARY:

  • Barry opened up a 37-21 lead at the 3:24 mark of the first half when Sunday Dech knocked down one of his four three-pointers. Lynn cut it to 14 on a pair of free throws by Daniel Cooper, but back-to-back triples by Dech gave Barry a 45-25 lead 1:32 before the halftime horn. Lynn scored the next two baskets before Evan Walshe hit a layup with 10 seconds to play to send the Bucs into the break up, 47-29.
  • Dech had 14 points of his 16 points on 5 of 8 shooting in the first half. Barry hit 57 percent of its shots in the first 20:00. Lynn was 11 of 30 from the floor for 36.7 percent.
  • With 13:55 to play, Barry's Johannes Dolven scored to put the Buccaneers in front, 61-41. But Lynn went on a 15-2 run over the next 3:06 to cut the lead to seven. Following a triple by David Moya at the 10:10 mark, Barry didn't score for the next 6:23. Brandon Bornelus sank two free throws during that stretch to pull the Fighting Knights within 66-63 at the 4:01 mark. After Tomic ended the Bucs scoring drought with a lay-in with 3:47 to go, Lynn forward Michael Baez buried a triple to cut it three again.
  • Tomic sank two free throws with 19 seconds left to push Barry's lead back to five, but Bornelus buried a three at the other end to make it a two-point game with 12 seconds left. But Glick canned two free throws with eight seconds on the clock to seal the deal.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry has bounced back from a loss with a victory three times this season.
  • Daniel Mortensen was held scoreless for the first time this season.
  • Sawyer Glick hit three triples for the fourth straight game.
  • Dech scored in double figures for the 10th time this season.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"What I was really pleased with was, without Elvar (Fridriksson), the calming effect of David Moya. You've got to understand Lynn is one of the hottest teams in the league."
-- Barry fifth-year head coach Butch Estes
