MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — Nicholas Johnson joins the Barry University rowing program as the assistant coach, as announced by Director of Athletics
Michael L. Covone.
"I am very excited to join the Barry family and a rowing program with so much success," Johnson said. "Having the chance to work alongside Coach (Boban) Rankovic is a tremendous opportunity, and I can't wait to help continue moving this team forward."
Johnson has extensive experience, having coached at various levels since 2005, most recently serving as the men's head coach with the Saint Andrew Rowing Club in Atlanta, Ga., where he led the Varsity 4+ to an automatic entry during the 2015 Head of the Charles.
As the McLean High varsity girls head coach for the 2013 and 2014 spring seasons, he guided lightweight 8+ to their fourth consecutive state championship in 2013, and the Varsity 8+ to a fifth place finish at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Championships in 2014, the team's best ever finish in that event.
He worked with the Old Dominion Boat Club as women's head coach in 2009 and 2010 and as the sculling head coach in 2013. The junior women's 8+ placed 12
th at the 2009 Head of the Charles, the best finish ever by the club. In 2010, the junior women 8+ came in 23
rd at the Charles, and the junior women's double placed 10
th, earning the club automatic entries for the subsequent regattas.
