Baseball Knocks Off No. 20 Florida Southern, 11-4

Bucs pound 15 hits on Senior Night

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry baseball honored its graduating class in fine fashion Sunday night as the Buccaneers defeated 20th-ranked Florida Southern, 11-4, at Feinbloom Field.

The Bucs (24-23, 8-14 Sunshine state Conference) traded blows with FSC (28-16, 10-9) in the first half of the game, capitalizing on a Khalil Denson RBI single up the middle to score Ramon Valdez to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth. Barry tacked on five runs in its next at-bat when Alexander DeGoti, Ryan Baldwin and Julian Abreu all drove in runs. DeGoti singled up the middle to score Kyle Pangallo, Baldwin walked with the bases loaded, and Abreu knocked in a pair of runs with a hit.

FSC scored twice in the sixth to cut Barry's lead to 6-4, but the Bucs answered in the bottom half of the inning when Pangallo scored on a wild pitch and Baldwin singled home DeGoti. In the eighth, Jonathan Quintana drove in two runs with his team-leading sixth triple of the season, and Baldwin singled to right to extend the lead to six.

Baldwin was 2 for 4 with three RBI, Quintana 2 for 4 with two RBI, and Abreu 3 for 4 with two RBI. Eight Bucs accounted for Barry's 15 hits. Florida Southern was held to five. Denson was 2 for 5 with an RBI, Pangallo had two hits in four trips to the plate, and Valdez collected two hits in five plate appearances.

Bucs starter Alex Lavandero improved to 7-4, allowing four hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six. Mocs starter Ben Richardson (9-4) was chased after 5 1/3 innings after allowing eight runs on 11 hits.

The series concludes Monday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
