MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry softball team (23-19, 15-9 SSC) closed the season by dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Lynn 9-8 in eight innings and 9-4 on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference action at Buccaneer Field.
The Knights (17-31-1, 6-16-1 SSC) belted seven home runs, including four by Geena Capitini, in the sweep. Madison White hit two, including a grand slam, while Tori Rios hit the other.
The nine runs in each game matched the third highest total for the Knights this year.
FIRST GAME
The first game see-sawed back and forth. Lynn led 3-0 after the top of the second and 5-2 after the top of the third.
Dee Espinosa trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the third with her fifth homer of the season.
Ashley Fernandez put the Bucs on top 6-5 in the fifth with a two-run double off Francais Olexa (7-17). But Capitini, who had a two-run shot in the first, belted a three-run homer off Anieliese Palmeiro (11-7) in the sixth to make it 8-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bucs knotted the game at 8-8. Fernandez had another RBI double and Alayna Gallagher chased her home with a single.
But in the eighth, it was Capitini again, launching a solo shot that proved to be the game winner.
Olexa tossed five innings in relief of Katelyn Key, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks before being bailed out by Capitini. Palmiero, who went 3.1 innings in relief, allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, with all four runs coming on Capitini homers.
SECOND GAME
The Knights jumped out to a big lead and coasted to a 9-4 win in game two.
White belted a grand slam in the second inning off Palmeiro to make it 5-0.
Barry scored two in the bottom of the second. Kristina Pazienza hit a solo homer and Gallagher scored on a ground out by Lynsey Duncan.
But Capitini hit a solo shot of her own in the third and White had a solo homer in the fourth to make it 7-2.
The Knights scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, making it 9-2 before Barry rallied for two in the sixth. Gallagher and Kayla Ogle had back-to-back doubles and Ogle scored on a base hit by Megan Copeland.
Key (8-9), who worked 4.1 innings in relief of Rachael Lightner, allowed two runs on six hits and a walk. Palmiero took the loss for the second straight game, allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks.
Though the season did not end the way the Bucs would have preferred, they set three huge records. Ogle became the all-time batting champ by hitting .399 over her two-plus years. She also drew 60 walks for a .504 on-base percentage, another record. Espinosa, who blasted two homers in the series, finished with a .714 slugging percentage. Copeland finished seventh in batting (.368), eighth in on-base percentage (.425) and third in runs (138) and hits (224).
