Bucs meet top two SSC teams in next four matches

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry's run came to an end Saturday.

The Buccaneers volleyball team lost their first match at the Health & Sports Center since Sept. 16, falling to No. 26 Florida Southern, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 25-12, 15-10. Barry (14-10, 6-5 Sunshine State Conference) will now turn its attention to Tampa and Saint Leo for the next four matches in their fight to make the postseason.

After dropping the first set, Barry built a 13-9 lead in the second set on a kill by Jaeda Allen. Kaitlin Drake's kill pushed the lead to 19-13. A block by Ivana Didanovic and Genesis Castillo made it 23-16. Florida Southern (16-9, 8-5) scored the next four points, but a Mocs service error and a kill by Allen after a Florida Southern point gave the Bucs the set to tie the match at 1-1.

Allen finished with 20, 12 digs, two blocks and an ace.

The Bucs took a 10-3 lead in the third set after the intermission on a kill by Allen, but her service error allowed the Mocs to close within, 11-7. Kristina Filimonova's kill put the Bucs on top, 16-11. Jessica Sullivan's ace pulled Florida Southern within 19-17. A kill by Rachel Mostert closed the gap to 20-19, but a kill by Brittany Reynolds, stopped the Mocs run. Two kills by Allen sealed the set for the Buccaneers.

Barry hit .146 in the third set. Florida Southern hit .065. But the Mocs turned the tables in the fourth set, hitting .522, while the Bucs hit .040 to even the match at two sets apiece.

Didanovic and Reynolds combined for a block midway through the final set to pull Barry within 8-7. But a kill by Nicole Mattson, who had 25 putaways, capped a 6-0 run for the Mocs, who hit .174 in the fifth set. Barry, who had five kills and five errors in the last set, managed just one kill the rest of the way.
