MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University women's basketball team overcame a gritty Embry-Riddle team Saturday to win 79-65.
It is the Buccaneers 10th win of the season. Barry (10-4) remained perfect at home, improving to 6-0 in the Health & Sports Center.
Embry-Riddle (3-10) shot lights out in the first half, hitting 17 of 27 from the field for 63 percent to take a 45-40 lead into intermission. Barry hit 43.9 percent of its field goals in the first two quarters, going 18 of 41 from the floor.
The Buccaneers forced the Eagles into 12 second half turnovers to take control. After the Eagles led 56-54 entering the fourth quarter, Barry took a 61-59 lead on
Juhnae Richardson's basket with 8:39 remaining. The Eagles tied the game at 65-65 on a pair of Lauren Ellenberger free throws with 5:53 to play.
Irene Sanchez hit one free throw, and
Amra Elezovic sank a pair before Sanchez hit a jumper off a dish from
Jackie Perez with 3:19 left to put the Bucs ahead by five.
Ines Kerin, who scored all 14 of her points in the second half, scored with 1:28 to play to make it a 10-point game and put the Eagles away. Kerin had 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Barry scored 19 points off 23 Embry-Riddle turnovers -- a telling stat in an otherwise tight game. It was game that featured six ties and eight lead changes. Barry shot 41.8 percent, while Embry-Riddle hit 44.4 percent of its shots.
Sabrina Whiting had 16 of her 18 points in the first half, and Mercedes Jorge scored 16 for the Eagles, who outrebounded the Bucs, 36-30.
Sanchez finished with a career-high 18 points and six rebounds, and Elezovic had 14 points and six boards. Sanchez was 8 of 17 from the field. Richardson had a season-high 12 points, 10 in the first half.
The Buccaneers will host Nova Southeastern at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
