MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team learned this about itself this weekend: there is no quit in these Buccaneers.
Barry defeated Eckerd, 25-15, 21-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-8, for its second straight five-set Sunshine State Conference victory of the weekend. The Bucs improved to 4-3 overall, 2-1 in the league. Eckerd fell to 5-6, 0-3.
The Bucs, which improved to 2-1 in five-set matches this season, used a dominating first-set performance to steamroll past the Tritons in the early going. Barry converted 12 of 15 sideout chances for 80 percent, and committed just two hitting errors in a runaway set win. But the Tritons turned the tables in the second set, pounding 13 kills against just one error for a .462 attack rate, to even the match at 1-1. Barry produced its best hitting percentage of the match in the second set, putting away 35.7 percent of its attacks, but could not outmatch Eckerd entering intermission.
The Tritons, who used 18 kills from Tjasa Kotnik and 13 from JaQuayla Baker, raced out to a 16-11 lead after the break before Barry went on a 4-0 run, punctuated by
Kaitlin Drake's kill to draw within 16-15 in the third set. A kill by
Katie Dooley and ace by
Jasmine Serna tied the score at 20-20. Serna ripped off another ace on the ensuing serve,
Eva Raat banged down a winner,
Jenny Trinidad had a kill, Eckerd committed one of its four attack errors and Dooley slammed down one of Serna's 26 assists to give Barry a 2-1 lead in the match. Barry's 8-0 run to end the third set pushed all the momentum the Bucs way.
Eckerd didn't roll over, though. Instead the Tritons took advantage of a subpar Bucs hitting performance in the fourth set to even the match at two sets apiece. Barry had nine kills and seven errors for an .061 attack percentage in the fourth set, and converted only 47 percent of its sideout opportunities in that set. Eckerd hit .273 behind 12 kills in 33 hitting attempts for a .273 percentage.
Barry, which hit .236 in the match, sprinted to a 6-3 lead in the fifth set, capitalizing on one of Drake's team-high 18 kills. After Eckerd used a 4-0 run to go ahead 7-6, the Buccaneers went on a 6-0 spurt of its own to take a 12-7 lead. Baker's kill stopped the Bucs' surge before
Ariel Mangum served the final two points following
Ivana Didanovic's kill to give the Bucs the weekend sweep. Barry beat Saint Leo in five sets on Friday.
Raat had 15 kills, three straight aces and three blocks. Dooley hit .421, had 10 kills and two blocks, and Didanovic nine kills on .318 hitting in a match both teams had nine blocks apiece. Serna had 13 digs and two aces, and Trinidad 23 assists and 11 digs.
Brittany Jaco had 23 digs, and
Kat Espinosa and Drake 10 digs each. Eckerd's Emily Schadow and Gabriella Reis combined for 41 of the Tritons' 44 assists.
Barry overcame seven of the match's 25 tie scores and three of the 10 lead changes in the third set to swing the momentum its way.
The Bucs will play at Lynn 7 p.m. Tuesday.
