DAVIE, Fla. -- Barry University remembered the sting from last year here. And while the Buccaneers nearly flipped the switch, you can bet this volleyball team will circle Oct. 27 on the schedule.
The Bucs dropped a five-set match at Nova Southeastern Friday night in the Sunshine State Conference opener after building a 2-1 lead. Now Barry will have to wait until late in October to snap a mild two-match skid to the Sharks. Barry owns the series with a 25-5 record. The Buccaneers fell in this one, 15-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 15-13.
Barry (2-2, 0-1 SSC) will regroup for Saturday's 4 p.m. home opener against No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic (6-2). Nova improved to 7-1, 1-1.
The Bucs cruised in the first set, hitting .360 while holding the Sharks to seven kills, seven errors and an .000 attack percentage. But NSU knotted the match in the second set behind a 19-kill, .421 attack rate.Â
In the third set, Barry trailed 10-5, but went on a 13-5 run, capped by
Ivana Didanovic's ace to build an 18-15 lead.
Katie Dooley's kill extended the Bucs' lead to 20-18, and
Kaitlin Drake and Didanovic had kills down the stretch to close the set and give Barry a 2-1 lead in the match.
But Barry fell behind 17-10 in the fourth set and could not recover, and the Sharks overcame a 12-11 Bucs lead in the decisive set following one of
Eva Raat's 14 kills to pull out the comeback win.Â
Drake had 21 kills, and hit .326. Didanovic had nine kills, three blocks and attacked at a .241 rate. Dooley had seven kills and four blocks.
Jenny Trinidad had 25 assists, 13 digs and an ace, and
Jasmine Serna 20 assists, 10 digs and an ace in Barry's 6-2 offense.
Brittany Jaco had 29 digs and an ace.
Saturday's match can be seen on the
Buccaneer Broadcast Network with Danny Rabinowitz on the call.  Â
